A Croatian pensioner committed suicide after a tree growing in front of his house was cut down to make way for a highway, local media said on Wednesday.
The 83-year-old man, Bozidar Secak from Zlatar, in northwest Croatia, shot himself in front of road workers Tuesday shortly after they had cut the oak down, media reported.
The oak tree was cut down to allow widening of a nearby highway.
The pensioner, who was distraught about the tree being cleared, had earlier threatened local authorities with extreme action in an attempt to save his favorite tree.

Tragic. My heart goes out to the old fella, he was absolutely right about this.
Cutting down healthy trees that have been growing for decades in order to widen a worthless damned road that will be under-used anyway as gasoline prices continue to peak.
Another example of stupid, 'old' thinking by city planners. I hope they lose some sleep over this, but I doubt it.

I dont agree with what the man did, it doesn't solve anything - the phrase "like cutting off your nose to spite your face" springs to mind.
A more more relevant but far less well-known saying is "Like shooting yourself in the head to spite to workmen who are cutting down the very old oak tree to widen the road". Silly stuff!

Unamused...How can you know if a road is going to be used or not. Do you live there? IT IS NEVER RIGHT TO COMMIT SUICIDE, especially over a tree for goodness sake. The poor man obviously had more issues than a tree.
