A Japanese restaurant has changed the face of customer service by employing two monkeys to help with the table service.
The Kayabukiya tavern, a traditional 'sake house' north of Tokyo has employed a pair of uniformed Japanese macaque called Yat-chan and Fuku-chan to serve patrons.
Twelve-year-old Yat-chan is the crowd-pleaser as he moves quickly between tables taking customer drink orders.
The younger of the two, Fuku-chan is quick to give the diners a hot towel to help them clean their hands before they order their drinks, as is the custom in Japan.
Yat-chan and Fuku-chan, who are both certified by the local authorities to work in the tavern are well appreciate by customers, who tip them with soya beans.
'The monkeys are actually better waiters than some really bad human ones,' customer Takayoshi Soeno said.
Tavern owner Kaoru Otsuka, 63, originally kept the monkeys as household pets - but when the older one started aping him he realised they were capable of working in the restaurant.
'Yat-chan first learned by just watching me working in the restaurant,' he said.
'It all started when one day I gave him a hot towel out of curiosity and he brought the towel to the customer.'
A regular of the tavern, 58-year-old Shoichi Yano, says the animals are like her children.
'Actually, [they're] better,' she said. 'My son doesn't listen to me but Yat-chan will.'
Some clients, like retiree Miho Takikkawa, say Yat-chan appears to understand their exact orders.
We called out for more beer just then and it brought us some beer," she said. "It's amazing how it seems to understand human words.'
The monkeys work in shifts of up to two hours a day due to Japanese animal rights regulations.
But the owner is hoping to bring up the next generation of monkey waiters, and is already training three baby monkeys to work as waiters.

DEPLORABLE!! This is just SICK!! Blimey, I'm ashamed about the things my country (Spain) does to animals, but we have nothing on the bloody Japanese with this and the whales!! Sick SOW's!!!
With all the global protests against animal cruelty, it seems as if, instead of reducing the amount of bad things we can do to animals, we're increasing them!! This should be ILLEGAL!!
In fact, this is SLAVERY, pure and simple!! Hey, you're extremely greedy and selfish and don't want to spend money on employees, as you want ALL THE MONEY for yourself? Enslaven an animal that's able to do the job instead of paying one or two people and hey presto! you've saved yourself two monthly wages!! (and gained some really bad Karma in the process!).
Subhuman scum.

This article says these primates are 'employed' by the restaurant. Sorry but this is NOT employment. Those monkeys are SLAVES. I hope the Japanese animal rights faction hear of this and give that restaurant hell!!
Set them free and let them have the life they should in a natural monkey environment not amongst fauning ignorant diners looking for cheap thrills. Sad!!

Yes, some people have great ideas - employ animals they are for sure cheaper workers than illegal imigrants or children.
The monkeys are like children - with a collar??? indeed...

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS, NOT CUTE, AND CERTAINLY A DISGRACE!!
I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A TRAVESTY AND A MOCKERY OF ANIMALS.
INDIFFERENCE TO ANIMALS IS EVIL!!
I JUDGE EVERYONE BY HOW THEY TREAT ANIMALS BECAUSE THAT IS A TRUE TEST OF YOUR CHARACTER!! IF YOU FAIL THE TEST, YOU ARE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS! BYE-BYE!
WOLVES FOR OBAMA!!!!

The monkeys are clearly having fun. Those soybeans are good too. Beats eating tree buds and bark and living on some snowy mountain.

Hmm, I am against animal rights abuse, but do you really think this is so bad? They are domestic pets to their owners and (it seems) that they are not being badly treated, what's the difference between this and teaching your dog tricks? Don't you think some of you are getting a bit carried away, especially when there are far more needy animal rights issues i the world for you to put your energy towards instead of this one....which seems pretty harmless.

Monkeys are wild animals. They are not domesticated and they are not "pets." This b.s. is cruel, archaic and totally unnatural to the animals in question. GET CIVILIZED!
